Chris Mara grew up in Midcoast Maine, where she raised her family before moving to Kennebunk 20 years ago. She began her career teaching second and third grade at Nobleboro Central School and Jefferson Village School, and later served as Literacy Coach at the Hussey School in Berwick. After retiring from full-time teaching in 2018, Chris continued her passion for literacy education as a coach in schools from Deer Isle, Maine, to New Bedford, Massachusetts. She also spent 12 summers at KBIA as the reading teacher for children ages 5–12. One of her favorite projects was establishing several Little Free Libraries throughout Berwick, including one at River Tree Arts in Lower Village. Chris is an active member of the Edgcomb Tennis Club and has enjoyed serving as a docent at the Nott House. She currently serves on the Society’s Education and Events Committees. Outside of her professional and volunteer work, Chris stays active by walking, biking, going to the gym, and always taking on new projects. She treasures time with her three grown children and six grandchildren.
