Easter Eggs at the Hartley Lord House

26 Summer St Kennebunk was built in 1884/5 by Hartley Lord for his retirement from a long career at Boston making deep-sea fishing nets with twine from his brother Robert’s Twine Mill in West Kennebunk. After he died in 1912 the mansion passed to his grandson, Hartley Little Lord, who had four children that were raised part time in the house on Summer St.

Hartley Little Lord’s two daughters, Lucinda (8) and Anne (5) were hostesses at a 1918 Easter Egg Hunt at 26 Summer St. Their little brother, Hartley Little Lord II (2 ¾) was in attendance. The affair was covered in the Kennebunk Enterprise.

“The Misses Lucinda and Ana Lord entertained a few of their little friends to an Easter Egg Hunt, Wednesday afternoon. Eggs were hidden everywhere and the one to find the most and least were awarded prizes. The table decoration was in the form of a huge nest filled with chickens. Each child was given an Easter favor. After playing games, refreshments of ice cream and cake were served. Among those present were, Mary Lord, Dorothy Crane, Louise Larrabee, Lucille Taylor, Ralph Polly, Edward Parsons, and Hartley L. Lord II.“

Happy Spring to you, however you celebrate it, from all of us at the Kennebunkport Historical Society.
